Caterpillar Dreaming | Midnight by Elizabeth Napaljarri Katakarinja
The Story of Caterpillar Dreaming
This story is connected to a site near Wapurtali (Mt. Singleton), located west of Yuendumu. Here, ‘jajutuma’ (caterpillars) are found in ‘warrilyi’ trees (Blue Mallee). Paintings depicting the travels and actions of the Jajutuma in the Wapurtali area frequently illustrate a significant battle they fought with the ‘yarla’ (bush potato) ancestors.
Elizabeth Napaljarri Katakarinja's connection to Yuendumu stems from one of her great-grandfathers. In her spare time, she dedicates herself to painting her grandfather’s Jukurrpa (Dreaming) stories, which depict a wide array of ancestral places. She particularly enjoys painting Jajutuma Jukurrpa (Caterpillar Dreaming). This specific Dreaming narrates the story of the MacDonnell Ranges, symbolized by two caterpillars: one originating from the south, representing her mother’s side, and another from the west, connected to her grandfather’s lineage.
