Native Seed Dreaming | Sand by Molly Napurrurla Martin

The Story of Native Seed Dreaming

This Ngurlu Jukurrpa (Native Seed Dreaming) is deeply connected to Jaralypari, a significant site located north of Yuendumu. It highlights Lukarrara, a species of Fimbristylis grass, crucial for its edible seeds harvested in winter. These native seeds are traditionally processed: ground into flour on a large 'puturlu' (stone) using a smaller 'ngalikirri' (grinding stone). The resulting flour is then combined with 'ngapa' (water) to create nourishing seed cakes, a vital bush tucker.

Molly Napurrurla Martin is a pivotal artist from Yuendumu, whose works are celebrated for their profound storytelling. She meticulously translates her inherited Jukurrpa (Dreaming), including the Ngurlu Jukurrpa (Native Seed Dreaming), onto canvas. Martin's paintings, rich with traditional iconography, serve as powerful visual records of ancestral knowledge and the spiritual connection to her land, embodying the vibrant continuity of her cultural heritage.

The ‘Indigenous Kurkara Collezione’ incorporates original artworks translated into three-dimensional luxury rugs using the finest materials such as wool and silk.
