Mina Mina Dreaming | Central by Gayle Napangardi Gibson
The Story of Mina Mina Dreaming
An ancestral journey of a group of women who began their food gathering at Mina Mina. At this significant site, 'karlangu' (digging sticks) emerged from the ground. Taking these implements, the women traveled east, establishing Janyinki and various other sacred sites. As they journeyed, they collected 'ngalyipi' (snake vine) and performed important ceremonies. The 'ngalyipi' vine itself, which grows around the trunks and limbs of the 'kurrkara' (desert oak tree), holds multiple uses: it serves as a ceremonial wrap, a strap for carrying 'parrajas' (wooden bowls) filled with bush tucker, and even as a tourniquet for headaches.
Gayle Napangardi Gibson is a celebrated artist hailing from Yuendumu. Her compelling artworks primarily focus on her Mina Mina Jukurrpa (Mina Mina Dreaming), inherited from her father's lineage. This significant ancestral story vividly depicts women traveling and shaping sacred sites. Gibson's distinctive art occasionally features her mother's Dreaming or other traditional patterns. Her intricate compositions frequently incorporate classic motifs such as sinuous lines representing 'ngalyipi' (snake vine) and concentric circles.
The ‘Indigenous Kurkara Collezione’ incorporates original artworks translated into three-dimensional luxury rugs using the finest materials such as wool and silk.
